چکیده

It is known that future cellular communication systems must meet an ever increasing demand for mobile data rates, i.e. must consequently improve spectral efficiency. Two degrees of freedom to address this issue are to use a denser deployment or introduce cooperation between base stations. This paper introduces models to capture both achievable rates and the costs connected to these two options (addressing capex, opex, energy and backhaul), and yields an insight into their impact on the overall cost per bit.

An economic viability analysis on energy-saving solutions for wireless access networks

As the energy bill for mobile operators rises with the continuing traffic growth, energy efficiency problems attract an increasing attention in the telecommunication industry. However, the investment for the implementation of any energy-saving solution could be so costly that it may not achieve the total cost reduction. Therefore, the economic viability of the proposed solutions is of substanti...

End-to-End Mobility and Robust IP Soft Handover

We describe the design and implementation of a new transport layer protocol MMSP (Mobile Multimedia Streaming Protocol) that realizes end-to-end mobility and robust IP soft handover; its target is to greatly increase the quality of multimedia streaming applications over wireless networks. We address two main causes of quality degradation in the mobile environment. One is the frequent movement o...

Evaluation of the potential for energy saving in macrocell and femtocell networks using a heuristic introducing sleep modes in base stations

In mobile technologies two trends are competing. On the one hand, the mobile access network requires optimisation in energy consumption. On the other hand, data volumes and required bit rates are rapidly increasing. The latter trend requires the deployment of more dense mobile access networks as the higher bit rates are available at shorter distance from the base station. In order to improve th...

Energy-efficient design of heterogeneous cellular networks from deployment to operation

The ever-increasing traffic demand has motivated mobile operators to explore how they can boost their network capacity with a minimal increase in their capital and operating expenditures. In order to tackle this problem, we investigate the energy-efficient design of heterogeneous cellular network (or simply HetNet), especially with a focus on deployment and operation strategies. We first formul...

A portable base station optimization model for wireless infrastructure deployment in disaster planning and management

Disaster response requires communications among all affected parties including emergency responders and the affected populace. Wireless telecommunications, if available through a fixed structure cellular mobile network, satellites, portable station mobile networks and ad hoc mobile networks, can provide this means for such communications. While the deployment of temporary mobile networks and ot...
